Hi
again! Just saw something on the
news. Something I have never heard of
before. Was quite interesting, you may
have heard about it but I bet there are a few who haven’t. This story has two points that I would like
to bring to your attention. 1 is that
the internet can actually help those who use it and 2 it really isn't a bad
idea for men (and boys) to take a pregnancy test. Yep I said men!
There
was a story on the local news of a teenage boy jokingly taking a
pregnancy. The joke it seems on him, it
said he was pregnant! Now he knew he wasn't which is a good thing but also had a down side.
He
was a cartoonist and decided to right / draw a cartoon of his reaction and
post it, this
turned in to the good part about the internet.
He posted his comic on Reddit under "fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu" subreddit – a section of the site dedicated to rage comics, a genre of storytelling using a set of pre-drawn faces to express emotion. (Rage Comics | Know Your Meme). A few people saw it and realized what the test could mean and informed him to be checked out.
It seems that besides being able to predict pregnancy by detecting a hormone called Beta-HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), this hormone is also produced by certain testicular cancers. So although he is not pregnant he does have testicular cancer. The good news is that he caught it early, which means his chances are very good! The five-year survival rate for testicular cancer is 99 percent if the cancer hasn't metastasized [(meh-TAS-tuh-size) To spread from one part of the body to another. When cancer cells metastasize and form secondary tumors, the cells in the metastatic tumor are like those in the original (primary) tumor], so here's hoping this guy has a long, healthy, life.
